Grand Cayman Q&A
Week 1: July 9-16, 2011, Week 2: July 16-23, 2011
1. Where are the Cayman Islands?
The Cayman Islands are located in the Western Caribbean, approximately 480 miles south of Miami, Florida. Cuba lies directly to the north and Jamaica less than 200 miles to the southeast.

2. How do I get there?
The main airport in Grand Cayman is the 'Owen Roberts International Airport'. The airport code for this is GCM. There are more than 55 weekly flights into the Cayman Islands including 28 flights each week between Miami and Grand Cayman. All major airlines fly into Grand Cayman. You can enjoy direct flights from the following cities: Atlanta, Miami, Toronto, Newark, New York, Houston, Tampa and Charlotte. Please note these may change depending on airline schedules.
3. What is included in my Kids Sea Camp package?
All Kids Sea Camp packages include 7 nights accommodations, meals, 6 days of diving and activities, Family Day and more. For more information, please check out the What’s Included section.
4. When should I arrive in Grand Cayman?
Kids Sea Camp runs Saturday to Saturday. Should you wish to arrive early or stay late please let us know so that we can make the arrangements for you. On arrival day, you will be met at the airport and transferred back to the resort. Our welcome dinner and orientation starts at 6:00pm on Saturday night.
5. What is not included in the package price?
Airfare, departure tax, adult rental gear, wetsuits, dive staff gratuities, beverages, and dinner on Friday night
6. Do I need a passport?
U.S. citizens are required to have a passport for international travel. For details on travel requirements for U.S. citizens, please visit the U.S. State Department’s website. Non-U.S. citizens should check with the appropriate consulate.
7. How do I connect with KSC once I arrive in Grand Cayman?
There will be a bus waiting for you at the airport. The bus driver will have your name on the list and on a piece of paper that he’ll be holding up for you to find him. Verify that you're coming to Cobalt Coast Resort and attending Kid’s Sea Camp. He will bring you to the Resort to start your fantastic family dive vacation!
8. What is so great about diving in Grand Cayman?
There are lots of reasons. First of all, the Cayman Islands aren't mountainous and don't have rivers, so there isn’t any run-off into the oceans, inhibiting reef development. Second, all three Cayman Islands are actually submerged mountains tops so there are incredible walls all around the islands, reaching in some areas 20,000 feet or more in depth! Third, the Cayman Islands have always been very conscious of our precious resource and guarded it by establishing Marine Parks, limiting fishing, outlawing anchoring, educating divers and self-policing the behavior of dive operations.
9. Why Divetech at Cobalt Coast?
Divetech staff specializes in small surprises: committed dive instructors who will take you the finest dive sites like Tarpon Alley, Doc Polson, Oro Verde, Stingray City, Valley of the Turtles, Lexus Legacy and more. Dive instructors always give pre-dive briefings of all dive sites before entering the water. Plus, Divetech offers shore dives 24/7 - right out your front door with easy access from the dock as well as from Lighthouse Point which is just 8 minutes away.
Cobalt Coast is an intimate dive lodge, offering amenities such as free wi-fi, A/C, a full service bar, and restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
10. What is the water temperature? Will I need a wetsuit?
The water temperature averages 80˚F, rising to a high of 82-84˚F in July, August and September. A 3mm wetsuit or shorty is recommended, especially for those who plan to dive morning and afternoon. We also recommend a shorty or wetsuit for kids in their courses as they will be in the pool and ocean a lot throughout the week and we do not want them to be cold.
11. What is Family Day?
Fridays are Family Day. In Grand Cayman, this is the day that we all go to Stingray City to snorkel and/or dive as a family. Kids Sea Camp supervision ends at 12:00noon on this day to give each family a chance to go out and explore Grand Cayman. Friday night is our farewell dinner which is always wonderful and makes us never want to leave!
12. Where is the nearest decompression chamber?
The nearest decompression chamber is in George Town, Grand Cayman.
13. What happens to my deposit if I can’t come?
All payments made to Kids Sea Camp are nonrefundable. We highly recommend getting Trip Cancellation Insurance before your departure to protect your investment. We recommend DAN.
14. What are the sleeping arrangements in each room?
The one bedroom suite has 1 king bed or 2 full beds in the bedroom and then a queen sleeper sofa in the living room.
The two bedroom suite has one bedroom with a king bed, a second bedroom with 2 full sized beds and a sleeper sofa in the living room. It also has 2 bathrooms.
Please note that Kids Sea Camp cannot guarantee any particular room, but we will do our best to meet your requests.
15. Do I need to exchange currency? What is the exchange rate?
There is no need to exchange currency as almost everyone on the island accepts US dollars as payment. Just note that the exchange rate is $1.25 US for every 1 Cayman dollar.
16. Will I need a converter to use my electrical devices?
Electricity is the same in the Caymans as it is in the United States & Canada (110 volts, 60 cycles)
