COSTA RICA DIVE SITES- OCOTAL BEACH RESORT
Los Arcos- At the end of the west point of Santa Elena Peninsula you will find a fantastic arch formed by a couple of big rocks. This arch is home to a variety of marine life, especially schools of fish. Most commonly you might see schools of big eye jacks, schools of grunts, snappers, pacific chops, eagle rays, southern sting rays, white tip reef sharks.
San Pedrillo- This is a popular dive site where you can see bull sharks, known as “the big scare” for the incredible interaction you can have with the biggest shark of the region. It is the furthest west rock formation of the Bat Islands. You can see Bull Sharks, Mantas, schools of jacks, yellow fin jacks, yellow fin tuna, rainbow runners, cigarette fish, octopus, eagle rays and nice cleaning stations of butterfly fish.
Ojaranes- A rock formation, full of color with bold and interesting formations. Most common marine life: schools of big eye jacks, schools of grunts, snappers, pacific chops, eagle rays, southern sting rays, white tip reef sharks and big cleaning stations of king Angelfish.
Black Rock- This dive site is known for its variety of marine life, such as: schools of big eye jacks, eagle rays, schools of grunts, nurse sharks, mantas, sea horses, rainbow runners, etc.
Mangos- This sea mountain is an ideal place to encounter schools of juvenile King Angelfish. They make quite big cleaning stations and there is a nice variety of marine life that comes here to get clean.
Palmares- This is an underwater rock formation, a wonderful dive site to spot all kinds of rays! Also, there are a couple of sandy channels where white tip reef sharks come to rest.
Narizones- This is a deep dive. A sea mountain rock formation completely covered by yellow floral coral. It is also full of marine life, especially schools of fish.
La Islita- This is a fairly shallow dive site and is often used by snorkelers. About two thirds of the dive area is covered by a community of branched hard coral. You may see: schools of grunts, nurse sharks, coral reef, wrasses, parrot fish, lots of puffer fish etc.
Abismo- This is an underwater rock formation, covered mostly by snow flake coral. It is a great spot for small and big marine life.
Guiriguiri- A relatively shallow dive, known for its unique coral formations.
Meros- A shallow dive over an underwater rock formation. This is a great site to see big schools of grunts and snappers, butterfly fish, jewel eel, panoramic green morays, sea urchins, round rays, red eye gobies, blennies, three banded butterfly fish and lots of scorpion fish.
Virador- This is one of the most visited dive sites in our local area. Its diversity is incredible: marine life and coral communities along its rock formation makes this dive site very unique.
Cabeza de Mono- This is also one of the most visited dive sites in our local area. Its diversity in incredible- you can see schools of grunts, snappers, parrots, yellow tail surgeons, big eye jacks, eagle rays, puffers, spade fish, sea horses, clown shrimp, green panamic eels, etc.
Punta Ballena- The highlights here are the cleaning stations of rainbow wrasse. You will see a nice variety of marine life that comes here to get clean. It is a great place to see the spade fish and the schools of grunts in their process of cleaning.
Play Pen- shallow dive site perfect for beginners, full of schools of grunts and rays.
Sorpresa- An underwater rock formation covered by snow flake coral and yellow floral coral. There is a nice gathering of juvenile Mexican Hug fish which attracts a nice variety of marine life.
Tortuga- This is a very unique dive site. This is the only local spot with a ship wreck, a 45 ft. long metal ship used for commercial fishing. Now it is home to grunts, snappers, frog fish, groupers, eels. There are a few sandy channels surrounded by branched coral. Also perfect to encounter macro or small marine life.
Argentina- This is a site with a vast variety of things to see. Cleaning stations are the major attraction. There is also a nice community of branched coral reef, home of many different small creatures.
La Bolla- a completely immerged rock formation, not far from shore. Full of snowflake coral. Known for the encounter of rays and scorpion fish.
Escorpiones- A small rock formation named after scorpion fish. It is shallow with tons of small stuff to see along the rock formation.
Punta Gorda- A fantastic place full of marine life. Its shallow waters and coral formations make this site unique. Like surprises? Then you’ll love this dive site.
Tranquilo- Full of nice sandy channels this is a great site to dive when the northern winds are hitting the coast line. It is home to a nice variety of marine life. Often white tips are seen on the sandy channels.
Tiburones- A big rocky formation named after the big number of white tip reef sharks that are found here. The rocks are covered by snow coral. Great for all marine life- big and small.
Acuario- A sea mountain formed mainly of two big rocks with a sandy channel in between. It is a deep dive and it is great for encounters with southern sting rays. Whale sharks have also been seen here.
Arco Iris- This is a great spot to encounter eagle rays. This is a round rock formation that sticks a few feet out of the water. Big schools of fish are often seen here interacting with cleaning stations of butterfly fish.
La Vuida- This is a great place to encounter cleaning like no other place in the entire Gulf. You will also see tons of marine life.
Sombrero- This is a site part of the Catalinas Islands. Great for mantas and rays. This particular rock formations make nice little caves that are often visited by white tip shakrs, nurse sharks and lots of soldier fish.
La Punta- This is a place for magical encounters with mantas and golden rays. As part of the Catalinas Islands, it is one of the main sites to dive for big pelagics encounters. The cleaning stations of rainbow wrasse and the Mexican hug fish are the main attraction for mantas to come to this site.
La Pared- Here you can encounter mantas and golden rays. As part of the Catalinas Islands, it is one of the main dive sites for big pelagic encounters.
